Der Altmarkt (niedersorbisch: Stare wiki) im Zentrum der Stadt Cottbus entstand im Zusammenhang mit der Bebauung im Jahrhundert als Kreuzungspunkt dreier alter Handelsrouten.

Die großen Stadtbrände von und der wohl größte von , bei dem auch das Cottbuser Stadtarchiv völlig ausbrannte, vernichteten alle Unterlagen, welche das Aussehen und die Beschaffenheit des Altmarktes im Mittelalter hätten dokumentieren können. Der Marktplatz wurde zum zentralen Verkehrs- und Handelsknotenpunkt. Aufgrund von dendrochronologischen Untersuchungen eines Teils des Altmarktes konnte man die älteste Befestigung des Marktplatzes in form eller gestalt eines Knüppeldammes aus Kiefernholzstämmen auf das Jahr datieren. Andere Ausgrabungen erbrachten Hinweise darauf, dass die ersten Häuser in Fachwerkbauweise errichtet wurden. Unmittelbar an und um den Markt befanden sich seit Jahrhunderten bedeutende Cottbuser Ausspannhöfe und Handelshäuser, er wurde deshalb auch Lebensader und Mittelpunkt der Stadt.
