Born in in Prussian Holland (now Pasłęk, Poland) and educated in Berlin at the Academy of Arts under Erich Wolfsfeld, Lotte Laserstein dedicated her life to art. Even as a child, she dreamed of becoming an artist. Later, she was one of the first women to enrol on an art degree programme. Working successfully as a freelance artist was still completely unusual during the Weimar Republic. Nevertheless, Laserstein celebrated the first significant successes in her career with a solo exhibition at the Gurlitt Gallery in and her participation in the Great Berlin Art Exhibition at Bellevue Palace. However, this came to a sudden halt after the National Socialists came to power, who made life and work increasingly difficult for Laserstein due to her Jewish origins. In , the artist seized the opportunity and emigrated to Sweden. When Stockholm's Galerie Moderne dedicated an exhibition to her, Laserstein took the opportunity to take the work she had created up to that point with her into exile.

HISTORIK:
Lotte Laserstein är en av talets mer intressanta konstnärer, som på grund av andra världskriget dessvärre hamnade utanför de internationella och etablerade konstnärskretsarna. Vid nazismens maktövertagande i Tyskland stod hon på tröskeln till att bli en av de riktigt stora konstnärerna i Berlin.
Hon föddes i Preussische Holland i dåvarande Ost-Preussen (i nuvarande Polen) som dotter till en apotekare och en konsertpianist. Fadern dog tidigt och Lotte flyttade med sin mor och syster till Berlin Tio år senare antogs hon vid Konstakademien i nämnda stad och under sju år var hon elev till professor Erich Wolfsfeld. Adolf Hitlers makttillträde i Tyskland försämrade villkoren dramatiskt för den tysk-judiska befolkningen och Lotte Laserstein tvingades på grund av förföljelserna fly sitt hemland. I Sverige hittade hon en ny trygg grund att stå på, men smärtan över att ha fördrivits från sitt fädernesland och moderns död i Ravensbrück lämnade henne aldrig.
